humble role model for professional success

How to become a role model for professional success despite adversity?

Finding your role model for professional success seems impossible when you repeat to yourself every day: “My boss is difficult.” “My colleagues do not understand me.” “I struggle to go to work every morning,” “My job is not interesting, I want to change it.” “My efforts are not recognized.”

Do you recognize yourself in these phrases? If you had to describe your job, it wouldn’t be far from a grey and dreary sky.

In this article, we provide you with sound advice to stop complaining and step out of the victim mindset. On the contrary, you will become a professional model and dominate the adversity you encounter at work.

1. Knowing how to interpret situations

When we experience difficulties, we analyze them differently according to our own perceptions. Knowing the different types of interpretation and choosing the right approach allows you to stand out and be a role model for professional success. Here, we highlight 3 levels of situational interpretation: through Sight, Reason, or the Heart.

a. Interpretation by sight

Interpret by sight

This involves judging or making assumptions based on observed facts. This mode of interpretation is limited to perception from the senses. You then react without having a complete analysis of the situation. In many cases, we do not take the time to properly read the facts, and we react too early.

In this image, what do you see? This image evokes various interpretations depending on each person’s perspective.

Interpretations: Positive, Negative, or Philosophical

Positive interpretation: This image can symbolize a new adventure or a new beginning. The person standing there seems to contemplate a promising future. This reminds us that every end (the sunset) can be the beginning of something new.

Negative interpretation: Some might see the silhouette of a lost individual facing this vast world and feeling insignificant. They then deduce that, when facing life’s challenges, especially adversity at work, they are alone in their struggles.

Philosophical interpretation: For others, the photo may invite reflection on the nature of time and life. The sunset can symbolize the passage of time and the importance of living in the present moment. It shows that it is essential to take time to reflect. Time flies, and we must enjoy moments of beauty.

As in this photo, what we see depends on our personal perspective. It is essential to take the time to consider all facets of a situation before drawing conclusions or reacting. Understanding that there are multiple viewpoints can enrich our understanding of situations. Before reacting, let us pause to analyze the situation deeply. This will help us make more informed and appropriate decisions. But limiting yourself solely to sight can prevent you from becoming a role model for professional success.

b. Analyzing logically (Reason)

In this second part, we present analysis through reason—meaning logically, considering psychological or mental sciences. This method is not without its limits because not everything is rational. Managing people and relationships is not an exact science like mathematics. The proof: 1+1 = 3 or more, because a man and a woman united produce one or more children. This yields a result greater than two, giving a family of 3 or more. Depending on the case, 1+1 = 2 (a couple without children) or 1+1 = 3 (a couple with one child) or 1+1 = 4… There is therefore not a single answer, but several. Your reason must adapt and avoid remaining rigid.

Why is rational analysis important?

Analysis by reason allows us to structure our thoughts and step back from our emotions. It helps us understand facts objectively and form a deliberate judgment. However, this method has its limits. Humans are not purely rational beings: our emotions, intuitions, and experiences play a major role in our decisions. A purely rational approach can neglect these aspects, which can lead to cold decisions disconnected from human reality.

Adapting reason to human complexity

It is therefore necessary to understand that rational analysis must be flexible. Human relationships are nuanced and do not always follow a strict logic. A good example is that of interpersonal relationships in the workplace or within the family. Applying strict logic might seem practical, but it can ignore essential elements such as the emotional sensitivity of individuals, their implicit needs, or the power dynamics at play. Similarly, in team management, an approach based solely on logical performance fails to account for various aspects that influence motivation, such as recognition or trust.

c. Perceiving without partiality or prejudice (Heart) as a role model for professional success

The third mode of interpreting situations is analysis through the heart: seeking to understand others, their objectives, and their intentions without judgment. By acting in this manner, you will demonstrate empathy, making it easier to better understand the situation and react to it more appropriately. Empathy is the most critical leadership skill. According to research, 76% of employees working with empathetic managers are engaged, compared toonly 32% of those who experienced less empathy.

From experience, I sometimes took the time to ask for personal updates from my difficult colleagues or my hierarchical supervisor. I asked them directly how their family and children were doing (studies, health…). I noticed that this attention truly touched them and softened them at times. It is important to care about others rather than remaining self-centered. You will understand them better, freeing you from the way you view them and interpret their actions.

2. Mastering the responsibility cycle to become a role model for professional success

Think for acting and becoming a role model for professional success

Our thoughts are the trigger for the entire process: THOUGHTS – EMOTIONS – ACTIONS. From our thoughts are born our emotions, the actions we take, and the reading we have of situations that occur.

We must stop the vicious circle of lack of responsibility by taking full control of our thoughts and, above all, by deciding to respond to difficult situations the right way.

We are not saying that adversity at work does not exist, but rather that the reaction depends on you. Look at the example of the eagle that teaches us. The golden eagle is an animal that learns to soar by flying against the current. Opposition carries it higher. If you have not been confronted with certain difficulties, you will not be battle-hardened when challenges come.

Golden eagle attitude

The golden eagle, through its behavior, perfectly illustrates how opposition can be transformed into strength. Unlike other birds, the golden eagle heads toward storms, utilizing head-winds to gain altitude. When a storm approaches, instead of seeking shelter, it spirals upward using the updrafts created by the wind. In doing so, it manages to rise far above the storm, while many other animals allow themselves to be overwhelmed by fear.

This behavior illustrates a powerful lesson: face-to-face with difficulties, instead of yielding to panic, one can choose to rise. The golden eagle symbolizes resilience and the capacity to face challenges. It adopts a different perspective, using what seems to be an obstacle as a springboard to new heights.

Furthermore, the golden eagle demonstrates great patience and a precise vision. It waits for the opportune moment to seize its prey with precision and agility, showing that thoughtful decision-making is just as essential as immediate reaction. This reminds us of the importance of taking a moment to reflect before acting, allowing us to respond with wisdom rather than simply replying with emotion.

In short, the golden eagle teaches us that challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth. By adopting a similar attitude toward life’s trials, we too can learn to fly higher, above the storms of our own lives.

3. Choosing maturity and good character

It is necessary to adopt the right attitudes that allow one to succeed everywhere, even in a hostile environment.

a. Humility: an essential quality to be a role model for professional success

Humility is what helps us break free from harmful habits, because humility consists of humbly recognizing one’s flaws, weaknesses, and need for learning before public recognition. In the case of Joseph in the Bible, he was first a servant at his master Potiphar’s house, where he learned to manage his household and business. Afterward, he became the equivalent of the Prime Minister of Egypt. He could have fled and not completed this training, which was nonetheless necessary for his career. His example speaks to us because he remained humble until the very end, and this opened other doors for him at the appointed time.

This first stage of training in humility is often botched by many employees. Too rushed to reach the peaks, they take shortcuts that cost them dearly in the future.

Proverbs 15:33 declares that “Before honor is humility”.

b. Adding value to others

We are all on a path of maturity and growth, but the rate of our growth depends on the speed at which we discard habits, beliefs, and attitudes that do not serve us, and adopt new ones that do. Failing to add value to others is a major hurdle to being seen as a role model for professional success. Everyone must always be on the lookout for ways to add value to the lives of others, helping them develop by eliminating the useless attitudes they have subscribed to in their lives, something we can only discern if we listen carefully to what they tell us.

c. Slow to anger to dominate adversity at work

angry people

Angry people are not influential people. While Machiavelli’s principle asserts that it is better to be feared than loved, we should rather say that it is better to be trusted than feared. When we are slow to anger, we have more time to reflect, think, and respond more appropriately. When we react with anger, our priority is to defend ourselves rather than grow. We therefore become more defensive and lose the opportunity to make adequate decisions.

I was impulsive in my youth, but with experience, I matured and learned to contain myself. This allowed me to develop a calmer work environment with fewer conflicts to manage. It is paramount to turn your tongue seven times in your mouth before speaking, because “once water is spilled, it cannot be gathered back.” Learn not to cause damage with your words.

d. The role model for professional success is responsible

You must confront yourself by identifying your behaviors, attitudes, or beliefs that do not work for you and take responsibility for them. You will only be liberated from the moment you assume responsibility for your need to change. For some, it is always someone else’s fault; they have never made mistakes. This is a sign of immaturity that you must quickly correct if you recognize yourself in it.

e. Unity

We must learn to love and live with difference. It is easy to love people who share our point of view, and even easier to dislike those who show adversity toward us at work. Let us remember that iron sharpens iron.

Testimony: I remember my experience as an expatriate in Ethiopia, a country in East Africa. Coming from West Africa, the cultural difference shocked me. As a team leader, I learned to love all members just as they were, and this enabled our team to be united and excel. “Unity is strength,” and you must set the tone by inspiring others as a role model for professional success.

f. The role model for professional success has faith in the future

role model for professional success and faith in God

Without faith in your future, you live in a state of apathy and passivity. People who lack self-confidence struggle to step out of their comfort zone because they live in fear. When we act in faith, we are proactive in our lives because we do not worry about what will happen to us. This is not carelessness, but having faith in God who has prepared good things for you in advance.

g. The role model for professional success controls their feelings

Avoid letting yourself be manipulated by your feelings. A life controlled by feelings is wavering and unstable. You must learn to do what you planned to do, and not what you feel like doing. At our high school boarding school, we often did not feel like getting up in the morning, but alas, we had no choice. We learned this discipline, and it became second nature.

h. Stepping out of your comfort zone

Traveling ang going out of your comfort zone

How do you expect to progress within your comfort zone? When most people feel pressure or experience adversity at work, they retreat into their comfort zone and flee the responsibilities and difficulties that present themselves. Why? Because they are motivated by security and self-preservation. No growth can be achieved within the limited framework of a person’s comfort zone. You cannot evolve and become the role model for professional success you aspire to be if you refuse to step out of your comfort zone and cross over to the other side.

If you apply this practical advice, you will see that your reaction to opposition at work will change; you will be freed from it and become a model for others.

Do not hesitate to share this, and above all, leave your testimonies in the comments. This will be your contribution to adding value to others.
