Overcoming your limitations in 5 victorious steps

Overcoming your limitations sometimes begins with a simple, everyday challenge, like the day my 7-year-old son asked me to draw for him: “Draw a beautiful landscape? I don’t know how to draw.” Such was my response.

Since I was a young child, I never felt I had a soul for manual activities. As a good student in school, I had convinced myself that I was not cut out for anything manual (gardening, drawing, or painting). I devoted myself primarily to studying my lessons. Later on, this became a genuine block. And yet, great was my surprise when I drew at my son’s insistence that day. It was quite simply mag-nif-i-cent (it was not a Picasso, but for us, it was). I had just discovered at 40 years old that I knew how to draw. In fact, I realized that I had ultimately never really tried. What about you? What boundaries have you imposed on yourself? How can you overcome them?

1. The different types of limitations

In this section, we categorize limitations into 3 groups: those related to the body, those related to the soul, and finally, those related to the spirit. Since man is tridimensional, blocks existing at one level of his being can affect the other aspects, which is why it is vital to neglect nothing.

Physical limitations

Physical limitations are the easiest to identify because, for the most part, they remain visible to the naked eye. These are physical disabilities: sight, hearing, smell, speech, and general physical appearance (legs, arms, deformities of any kind).

A dentist once told us about the misfortune of a child with malformed teeth. His friends nicknamed him “warthog teeth.” He was self-conscious and struggled to make friends. This initially physical handicap led to emotional limitations. While it was correctable in his case, it is not the same for others who must live with it until the end of their days.

Among physical limitations, let us also note that some are not visible and can be hidden. In the professional world, I knew a hearing-impaired individual who feigned hearing perfectly. She refused to report her handicap, which had negative repercussions on her performance.

Identifying and overcoming emotional / mental limitations

Here, we address issues of the soul that cause you to react in a specific way in a given situation and demonstrate that you are limited in certain cases.

You recognize these elements when you say : “I can’t stand it when… / I can’t do… / I don’t know how to do…”.

If you aspire to live a pleasant and peaceful life, it is more than necessary to learn to accept differences. You will have a healthier life and avoid imprisoning or overloading your soul. For example, for an employee of African origin, it is “polite” to greet colleagues every morning, which is not mandatory in Western culture.

When limitations are deep-seated, some individuals can manifest their emotional or mental vulnerabilities in extreme ways: “bursting into tears” or “refusing to try.”

Spiritual limitations

The spiritual aspect is often neglected, though it is real. There are limitations acting on our spirit that affect the other two domains. Have you not observed families where no one has ever graduated from university? Families where no one has married? Families where no member has had a stable relationship?

In some cases, these may be repetitive or cyclical situations in your own life. In other cases, they are identical situations occurring in the lives of multiple members of your extended family. I advise you to pay close attention to this. These are indeed spiritual limitations that cannot be explained rationally.

We hope to have opened your mind to useful information to help you in overcoming your limitations. Now, observe your own life and your family. Which limitations are you enduring, whether they are physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual?

2. Knowing all your barriers before overcoming your limitations

The entire 15th chapter of the Book of Luke in the Bible teaches us that limitation, represented here by loss, can be grouped into two (2) sub-groups.

Conscious limitations

Lost lamb
  • Parable of the lost sheep There was once a shepherd who had lost one of his sheep. He did everything in his power to find it. The story ended well because he did indeed find it.
  • Parable of the prodigal son There was once a son who left his family after claiming his share of the inheritance from his father. He went and squandered it, and after an internal reflection, he returned home to beg for forgiveness. This story also ends well.

In the first case, the lost sheep is aware that it is lost but struggles to find the way back. In the second case, the son is also lost but has the capacity to find the way back on his own.

Even if you are aware of your limitations, do you have the means to get through it alone? Which parable resembles your context?

Unconscious limitations

You think you know all your limitations, which is not always true. The example of the lost coin in chapter 15:8-10 of Luke in the Bible demonstrates this to you.

8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of Dieu over one sinner who repents.”

The lost coin has no idea what is happening to it. It is not aware that it is lost. It is only the people who understand the facts who fight to find it and deliver it from its wanderings. Who are the people around you who can help you bring to light your unconscious or ignored limitations?

To truly succeed in overcoming your limitations, a comprehensive approach requires looking at your shadow areas with courage. It is by becoming aware of your own weaknesses that you can positively transform them into levers for success.

3. How to overcome your limitations to live free?

Step 1: Ask yourself the right questions and uncover the root causes

To begin moving past your boundaries, it is crucial to understand their origin. The reasons behind the limits or limitations you experience stem from various sources. This requires honest introspection. Ask yourself the right questions:

  • Why do I think I cannot?
  • Is it fear preventing me from moving forward?
  • Is it the judgment of others?
  • What limiting beliefs were instilled in me by my education or society?

Understanding these mechanisms allows you to put words to what is holding you back and to identify the real or imagined obstacles hindering your progress.

Step 2: Change your own perspective on your limitations

Once the causes are identified, it is time to shift your perception of these boundaries:

  • The law of the mirror: What you believe about yourself is reflected in your daily life. If you view yourself as limited, you will act accordingly. Change this reflection by adopting a new vision of yourself. This is the starting point for overcoming your limitations.
  • Appreciate and make the most of it: Every limitation can hide an opportunity. Learn to see challenges as means to improve rather than insurmountable blocks.
  • Do not compare yourself to others: Everyone has their own path and their own challenges. By avoiding comparison with others, you focus on your own progress. Have you not heard the story of the poor man who, throwing away his old coat, was surprised to see an even poorer man pick it up to use it? In Ivorian French, they say “Quelqu’un laisse, quelqu’un prend” (One leaves it, another takes it) because you have value; you are appreciated by certain people despite your condition.
  • Become an ambassador of your experience: Transform your limitations into strengths, and inspire others to surmount theirs. For example, many athletes with disabilities become role models of inspiration through their ability to transform their difficulties into success. The documentary of a woman losing her sight.

Step 3: Try, test to overcome your limitations

Too often, our limitations remain simply because we do not try to push them back. The process of trying is an act of courage and openness. It allows us to discover new capabilities, unsuspected skills, and solutions that we would never have considered had we remained in our comfort zones.

To truly achieve overcoming your limitations, you must take action:

  • Step out of your comfort zone: It is by testing new things and taking calculated risks that you can truly push your boundaries. It is within discomfort that the greatest opportunities for growth lie. The simple act of testing your capabilities against an unknown or uncomfortable situation allows you to go beyond your fears and doubts.
  • Confront your fears: Often, our blocks are fueled by unfounded fears. By facing these fears directly through concrete actions, they lose their hold on us.
  • Accept failure as a learning opportunity: Each attempt teaches you something about yourself and your capabilities. Consider failures as opportunities to refine your approach and better understand your strengths and weaknesses. It is this attitude that will allow you to surmount real or perceived blocks.
  • Take regular baby steps: Rather than trying to conquer everything at once, commit to progressive actions that will allow you to move forward sustainably. Each victory, no matter how small, builds self-confidence and pushes limitations further away.

The story of my drawing mentioned above illustrates this point beautifully. It was by trying despite the fear of failure that I realized my capacities were broader than I thought. This crucial step consists of breaking the cycle of self-censorship, excuses, and limiting beliefs by daring to do what we believed was impossible. It is by taking these initiatives that you will find the keys to your own liberation.

Step 4: Accept guidance and support

External support is often indispensable in the process of moving past your limitations:

  • Seek a mentor or a coach: Sometimes, it is easier to recognize and overcome your limitations with the help of someone who has already navigated similar obstacles. A mentor can offer you invaluable advice and an outside perspective.
  • Surround yourself with benevolent people: Your circle plays a crucial role in your journey. Encouraging people can help you persevere, whereas toxic relationships can stall your progress.
  • Participate in support groups: Sharing your experiences with others facing similar challenges can be a powerful source of motivation and inspiration.

Step 5: Pray to the heavenly Father and act for overcoming your limitations

Pray for overcoming your limitations

Spirituality can play a key role in moving past boundaries, especially those that seem beyond rational reach:

  • Seek God’s will: If you are a believer, prayer can help you seek divine guidance and understand the root reasons for certain limitations, whether they are physical, emotional, or spiritual.
  • Accept certain limitations: Some limitations, like those of the Apostle Paul with his “thorn in the flesh,” may be there for a reason. It is a matter of finding peace in what we cannot change, while acting upon what is within our power.
  • Act with faith: Prayer must be accompanied by actions. Once you have understood what you need to do, commit with determination to move forward, leaning on faith and your capabilities.

Conclusion

By applying these five steps with sincerity and commitment, you will learn to know yourself better. This is the key to overcoming your limitations and building a fully thriving professional and personal life.

This journey will allow you to surmount your blocks to live a freer life, from victory to victory.
