To achieve the goal of unlocking your best self and building a fulfilled professional and personal life, it is essential to understand the impact of our daily habits. The African-American student Benjamin (Ben) Carson used to spend a lot of time in front of the television with his brother, watching worthless programs. To improve their academic performance, their mother required them to watch instructive shows and also to read two books per week. Although they did not like reading at first, this awakened their intelligence and opened doors that were previously inaccessible. They discovered hidden talents within themselves.
Ben went on to have a remarkable career as a neurosurgeon, and his brother became an engineer. He is recognized as a benchmark in his field because he was the first to successfully separate Siamese twins joined at the head. The lesson we take from this is that knowing yourself well is the starting point of all success and is also decisive for your future. Do you really know yourself? What can you do to know yourself better and reveal the best within you?
To support you in this process of learning and evolution, this article presents a detailed journey through seven fundamental steps. We will see how to lean on your roots, fortify your skills, transform your limitations, master your self-awareness, choose your motivators, anchor your values, and overcome every difficulty in life.
1. Value your origins to build your foundations and unlock your best self
The history of each individual constitutes the bedrock upon which their future evolution rests. Valuing one’s origins allows a person to stabilize their personal trajectory, accept their identity, and draw the necessary strength to move forward with confidence toward their life goals, without ever denying the land where they grew up.
The starting point of your life

Imagine that I call you to ask for directions to the Yamoussoukro Basilica in Côte d’Ivoire. The first question you would ask me is my starting point. If I refuse to share it, you cannot help me. It is the exact same way with your life. If you are seeking direction in your life, it is paramount that you know where you come from. This will determine your destination. If several of us are going to the same place, we will take different paths depending on our starting points. Embracing this reality is the first indispensable step to moving forward serenely and thus unlocking your best self. By precisely understanding your point of origin, you validate the map of your existence and equip yourself to choose the right path.
Envy no one, but rather be proud of your origins
You are a solution for those around you. For example, being born in an underprivileged neighborhood allowed you to experience the difficulties of that environment firsthand. This experience must drive you to fight for change. Do not be defeatist or fatalist.
This is also true for wealthy environments. There are problems specific to those settings. You must revolt against them and refuse to suffer the same setbacks as most people. In short, whatever your origins (race, country, gender, birthplace…), you must accept them and draw strength from them.
The example of Martin Luther King serves as a powerful teaching. He became a role model for multiple generations long after his death because he refused to endure the racial injustices of his time. He drew from his identity the courage to transform his environment.
By fully accepting your starting point and the history of your origins, you consolidate the foundations of your identity. This inner peace now allows you to turn your focus toward your personal skills in order to identify, nurture, and actively amplify all of your strengths.
2. Improve your individual strengths through discipline and continuous work
Raw talent is merely a predisposition that requires rigorous and constant maintenance over the years. To succeed in unlocking your best self, you must commit to a routine of regular learning. Taking care to sharpen your faculties in order to sustainably accelerate your personal fulfillment must be your motivation.
“Nothing is ever permanently acquired by man” — Louis Aragon

Your natural strengths or talents present since birth must be nurtured. If they are not, you will see them gradually disappear. Have you ever seen students who were at the top of their class at the beginning of a school cycle finish high school at the bottom of the list? Some simply gave up on their studies, and the results reflect that. Successful people continually renew their personal faculties. Taking the time to improve your capacities will allow you to save precious time and accelerate your success. Stephen Covey mentions four aspects of our being that are important to maintain to become stronger:
- The physical aspect (nutrition, sports, well-being),
- The spiritual aspect (meditation, prayer, reading),
- Reifying your intellectual faculties (continuous learning, an analytical mind),
- The socio-emotional aspect (your interdependent relationships with others).
To succeed in any environment, you will need to work on all of these in a balanced way, as they interact with one another.
The law of consistency to unlock your best self
Consistency is a law that must be applied when one wishes to go far. Always do what you do well, and never stop. To progress each day and succeed in unlocking your best self, regularity must become embedded at the heart of your lifestyle habits.
“The secret of success is found in your daily routine.” — John Maxwell
He also adds that: “To make meaningful changes, consistency must be a primary ingredient. Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.”
Didier Drogba, the former Ivorian international footballer, often trained on his own and redoubled his efforts. Knowing that he had to nurture his talents, Didier would return after collective training sessions to continue practicing. Remaining consistent in this approach allowed him to considerably improve his shooting to the point of excellence. Although he was deeply talented, this did not stop him from being persevering in his personal training and working relentlessly. Today, he reaps the rewards, while other footballers, including Mario Balotelli, tarnished their careers due to a lack of discipline and regularity in training.

Developing one’s strengths through daily discipline constitutes a major pillar of personal evolution. Nevertheless, a holistic approach also involves looking at one’s dark areas with courage. We will now analyze how to face your own limitations to successfully transform them in a positive way.
3. Transform your weaknesses into strengths through awareness and labor
Recognizing one’s own limitations is not an admission of failure, but proof of intellectual and emotional maturity. It is by facing your gaps and actively working to correct them that you will manage to fully accomplish your goals and succeed in unlocking your best self every day.
Recognize your weaknesses to better advance toward the goal of unlocking your best self
You must be humble enough to recognize your weaknesses. These are the flaws that you have often known about for a long time, or that others constantly repeat to you.
Sometimes, there are weaknesses you are completely unaware of. In this case, we advise you to do a short exercise by asking those who love you (parents and friends) to list the flaws they have noticed. Do not take it poorly and do not argue over the list. Once you are aware of them, you can reduce their impact. This Bible verse on humility says: “when I am weak, then I am strong.” It reminds us how much being aware of your weaknesses elevates you. This humility shatters the illusion of perfection and opens the path to change.
Work on improving your weaknesses
It is entirely possible to turn your weaknesses into your new strengths. A flaw is often a poor reaction to a given situation or the exaggeration of a quality. Is it not said that everything is bad in excess?
A person who is kind to an extreme will be manipulated by others, and their kindness will become a flaw. It is instead advised to remain good while being wise about the help you provide.
For someone else who is overly sensitive (who misinterprets contexts and adopts inappropriate behavior), they will need to learn to better read events to avoid making mistakes. This will lead them to perfect their sense of observation and their level of accurate interpretation. From being “sensitive,” they will then become an excellent analyst of situations and will be able to advise others. This is an outstanding way to work on yourself to achieve the goal of unlocking your best self.
Antoine Lavoisier said, and I quote: “nothing is lost, everything is transformed,” and I add that this applies even to your flaws.
The transformation of individual flaws requires a clear-eyed look at one’s own behavior. This approach leads us to a deeper exploration: the analysis of the different levels of self-awareness, which dictate how we react to those around us.
4. Elevate your level of self-awareness to transform your outlook on life and unlock your best self
Self-awareness is a tool for measuring our inner maturity. To progress and succeed in unlocking your best self, it is crucial to study the scale of human attitudes. There are seven levels of self-awareness, and it is up to you to position yourself accurately on this scale to evaluate your daily behavior.
Levels focused on the self (1 to 3)
Victim
A person at this level complains a lot on a daily basis without ever proposing concrete solutions to get out of their situation. They endlessly criticize their difficult working conditions, the behavior of their office colleagues, the attitude of their direct line manager, or the low level of their monthly salary. They endure the events of their life, constantly behaving like an unhappy victim, but they never seek, on their part, to bring viable solutions to improve their own condition.
Aggressive
This level corresponds to a situation of permanent defiance toward the world around them. The individual adopts a hostile behavior and is aggressive to protect themselves from others, whom they perceive as threats. They refuse dialogue, reject feedback, and find themselves in constant conflict with their family, friends, or collaborators, creating a climate of sterile opposition.
Assertive / Responsible
Here, the individual crosses a major positive milestone in their evolution. They actively cooperate with everyone around them and finally decide to take control of their life. They no longer look for excuses for their failures, own their decisions, express their needs with respect, and are deeply at peace with others in their everyday relationships.
These first three levels of self-awareness (Victime, Aggressive, and Responsible) are essentially centered on the self and its immediate needs. The following four levels, by contrast, shift direction and are deeply focused on others, sharing, and helping one’s neighbor.
Levels focused on others (4 to 7)
Altruistic
The altruistic individual looks beyond their own interests to turn toward their neighbor. They sincerely put themselves at the service of others, generously giving their free time to listen to them in times of difficulty, and sharing their talents to help them progress. They bring concrete solutions to their daily problems with kindness.
Reconciling

This profile possesses great relational and human maturity. In addition to personally maintaining peaceful relationships with others, they intervene with wisdom and help them reconcile in the event of conflicts or disputes. This is possible solely because they possess genuine inner peace that they wish to communicate and spread around them.
Impactful
The impactful person is driven by a constructive vision of community life. They fight daily to find sustainable and positive solutions to the collective problems they encounter. They wish to positively impact those around them and improve their social environment. Their deep inner motivations are oriented toward the good of others. This is the case for most social entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and inventors.
Self-giving
This is the 7th level of the scale, the ultimate level of human evolution. It belongs to the exceptional leader who, in a totally voluntary and selfless manner, gives their entire life to their absolute passion, the human cause for which they live. Here, we speak of striking personalities such as Mother Teresa or Martin Luther King, to name but a few.

What is your current dominant level of self-awareness, and for what reasons? At which precise level would you like to position yourself in the days to come, and why? What practical actions will you put in place to get there?
5. Choose the right motivating factor to direct your actions and unlock your best self
Our actions draw their strength from the nature of the motives that trigger them. Identifying what drives you to take action is an inescapable step to refining your life projects, purifying your deep intentions, and succeeding in unlocking your best self in a sustainable and balanced way.
Sources of motivation can be grouped into three distinct categories:
- Earning more money,
- Oneself: Making a name for oneself,
- Others: Making a difference, being impactful, helping others.
The first two levels of motivation (Money and Oneself) are solely oriented toward the personal improvement of our quality of life, material security, and the satisfaction of our ego seeking public recognition.
Conversely, the very last level centered on others drives us to look past our personal interests to actively seek concrete ways and means to bring a positive, real, and lasting change into the lives of others.
By making a logical link with the seven levels of self-awareness presented above, it clearly emerges that the most useful, strong, and noble motivating factor is “others.” This altruistic engine provides us with a far more useful reason to live on a daily basis and therefore naturally elevates us to the higher levels of self-awareness.
Take the time to observe yourself.
What is your current dominant motivating factor?
Why do you act the way you do?
If you realize after reflection that you are among those primarily motivated by money or by yourself, what must you undertake starting today to shift your approach to life and turn toward helping your neighbor?
6. Focus on your inner values to keep the right course

In a constantly changing world, where benchmarks sometimes fade under the pressure of circumstances, personal values represent an individual’s ethical compass. You must guard your values preciously and never detach yourself from them, regardless of the family, friendly, or professional context in which you operate.
Transgressing your own principles to please others or to gain a quick advantage destroys self-esteem and distances you from your ability to succeed in unlocking your best self. Your core values constitute the bedrock of your self-respect and the guarantee of your long-term integrity.
Here are some essential values of resilient individuals who successfully thrive and walk through the seasons of life with uprightness:
- Stay true to yourself: preserve your authenticity, refuse pretense, and act in total alignment with your deep convictions.
- Humility: recognize that you always have something to learn from others, accept your mistakes, and listen to sound advice.
- Collaboration: work hand in hand with those around you, share your skills, and build common projects together.
- Connection: build sincere human relationships, open up to others, and refuse destructive isolation.
- Empathy: be capable of feeling the pain or needs of your neighbor, and adapt your behavior to support them.
- Team spirit: prioritize the interest of the group over personal interest, support your partners, and move forward together toward the goal.
- Accept difference: understand that diversity of opinions, cultures, and characters is a wealth for the mind.
- Good perspectives on difficult situations or otherwise: maintain a healthy, balanced, and constructive reading of life’s events.
In a practical way, how do you plan to develop these key values in your life in the days to come? What daily actions demonstrate your loyalty to these life principles? This alignment prepares your mind to face the turbulence of existence.
7. Accept life’s trials as indispensable progression tests
Trials or difficulties are everywhere in human existence. Everyone experiences them, with no exception for environment, age, or social condition. You must face them with courage by not procrastinating in front of problems. Additionally, you must remain perfectly objective, maintaining an accurate reading of situations.
The right attitude in front of an obstacle requires you to consider that trials can always be resolved. A solution always exists, even if it does not look like what you imagined or planned at the start.
Another important point to keep in mind is that trials are temporary; they only last for a season and eventually fade away to make room for a new season. You must stand firm and pass the test of the trial without lowering your arms or abandoning your efforts. Furthermore, trials are an integral part of daily life. It is completely normal to encounter obstacles on your path. The hidden purpose of difficulties is, in reality, to make you better because they challenge you, stimulate your creativity, strengthen your endurance, and push past your personal boundaries. It is by overcoming these regular tests that you will manage to fulfill your potential and succeed in unlocking your best self.
Conclusion
By applying these 7 keys with consistency and seriousness, you will progressively discover who you are and better understand your internal inner workings. This will be a wonderful opportunity for unlocking your best self in order to better live your existence and, above all, to be a blessing to all those who connect with you on a daily basis. The journey toward self-knowledge is demanding, but the fruits of this transformation are lasting and bring true inner peace.
